living on a movie set

Since moving here nearly 2 years ago, I’ve often thought my new life seemed a bit like a movie (commencing further inner dialogue: “No, movies are like life.” But however you look at it…). I walk to the bodega and the Manhattan skyline sits in the background. Bill proposed in Central Park.Office meetings overlook the Chrysler Building. I’m surrounded by movie icons, for goodness sake. And I’ve got to say, it gets kind of weird. I remember going to see “Enchanted” at a theater in Times Square, and lo and behold, partway through the movie Princess Giselle pops out of a manhole in—where else?—Times Square.

Then a few months ago we were watching the movie “Bella” on Netflix instant-view when I realized the two guys in the opening scene were driving around our neighborhood. (A sidenote: this is a great film about a woman choosing between abortion and adoption…a quiet look at her struggle).

Last month, Bill and I hopped on the bus to visit a friend in South Williamsburg. As we passed by the Williamsburg bridge, we saw a tractor trailer truck on the side of the road, completely missing it’s back wheels. Another car was smashed up next to it. But there were no ambulances, no cop cars. Everyone was just moving around the scene. And then I realized it was just that—a scene. Cameras were rolling further up the street. I soon forgot about it, until last week Bill and I happened to be watching Fringe, which shoots quite a bit in our neighborhood’s park and restaurants (and tries to pass it off as Boston!). And you guessed it: we saw the digitally-enhance version of the “crash” we’d passed a month before.

I suppose there are reasons so much is filmed here. One, the area is saturated with talented actors and producers. Also, New York City possesses an inherent connotation for viewers. If I were to film something in my hometown of Granby, CT, I’d have to explain Granby in order for you to have some context. But most people already have a sense of “New York City.” Another thing: you can’t beat the scenery. You can move from gritty to gorgeous, opulent to Bauhaus, cement to green within blocks. So many backdrops, so much history, so many “big names.”

I think I could very easily get caught up in celebrity of it all (which I suppose is self-evident by the existence of this blog entry). But thankfully, I’m married to Bill. He is completely unphased by it all. I think he’s got a much better grip on what really matters. I say things like “Let’s go–Jennifer Aniston is filming down the street!” (seriously, she was). He usually just shrugs his shoulders as if to say, “Yup, another human being, woohoo,” and keeps on walking. Right past the paparazzi.

Please find an hour this week to watch this video. Rachel Barkey, 37-year-old mother of 2, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and shares her thoughts at a women’s group. Life-changing to watch, and worth every minute.

This is your official invitation…

invite

Dear friends,
On Saturday and Sunday, June 6 & 7, I will be participating in the Renegade Craft Fair in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This is not your mom’s craft fair, folks. It’s funky, fun stuff such as art, jewelry, fake mustaches, and pirate vs ninja checker sets. I will be selling my felt wallhangings under the name Junebug Felts, and sharing a booth with my friends GooseGrease and LiveFromBrooklyn.

I’d love for you to swing by, even if you don’t buy anything from me–seriously. It’s a great cause (supporting local artisans), and a great place to start on Christmas gifts, get that last minute Father’s Day gift, or cover a bare apartment wall.

Even better, all of JuneBug’s profits from the fair go to Williamsburg Church’s Mercy Ministry, which helps feed and support the poor and homeless of Brooklyn. So come support several good causes all at once!

These are just delightful
