its a mad mission

And now, a lighter post this week…

I guess I’d always assumed that everyone loves naming things as much as I do. Why wouldn’t they? You can say so much about a person, place or thing through just a small string of sounds –– letter combinations can sing or scowl. Lucy sounds like a nicer lady than Bertha. Living in Florence sounds preferable to Liverpool. And a Mac sounds more appealing than a Hewlett Packard.

Bill, inexplicably, does not have this same naming obsession. What? You don’t love naming your pet something that sounds cool, but not cliché, that makes a statement about that little critter’s personality? I loved the name of my family’s dog, Cassidy. Now it screams mid-90s to me, but when we found it embroidered on a dog bed in the L.L.Bean catalog, we knew it was the one. It SPOKE to us. Later, I titled my guinea pig Dr. Huxtable. Have I mentioned I have a special place in my heart for absurd or ironic names? Go ahead, name your pomeranian Brutus.

I think my name preoccupation is rooted somewhere in my love of language. When I was young, I read non-stop. I also wrote stories. Or rather, started stories. I would spend hours creating and naming the characters (I remember one of the titles, “Missing Millicent.” I sketched the cover, too: a victorian girl with sidelong glance, probably at the grave of her dead sister). I completed maybe two of these tales. But writing them wasn’t really the fun part for me anyway.

My house in S.C. was called the Little Yellow Bungalow, which also doubles for my imaginary rock band’s name. My camera’s name is Paco. My work computer is Jacopo (long story, but read The Count of Monte Cristo’s account of Edmond Dantes’ first encounter with his future servant). My guitar’s name is Damascus. My cherry red CRV was name Mr. Darcy. Our future children are Will, Lila, Jude and Ezra (friends of ours used names with four letters for all of their nine children—fabulously efficient for yelling at your kids, if you ask me!). Then again, I’ll probably have changed my mind by the time we have kids and end up with Victoria, Seraphina, Zacharias and Delphinium.

My own name, Jessica Ann, always seemed especially boring. During the 80s I wished with all my heart to be named Tiffany or Stephanie. Anything but the most common name the year I was born, followed by Ann WITHOUT an E. I figured ’81 was just an uncreative year for my parents. But a few weeks ago, I found out that I am named after my dad’s favorite guitar song at the time, “Jessica,” by the Allman Brothers. I have a renewed sense of purpose.

Are there any other word nerds out there who love names, or name any purchase over $200 like I do? I’d be interested in reading about some of them…

in creative services they were naming the printer. they narrowed the choices to maximus (or something like that) and optimus prime. to me, the choice is clear. i can’t remember what they picked though. i think that stan and eugene are great names for anything, animate or inanimate. stan the man, stan the dog, stan the tree, stan the desk. eugene the trash compactor…

I believe we are kindred spirits, my friend. I too am a namer. I have always named my things, from houses to items of clothing to cell phones and plants, to cars and imaginary friends. Some of my personal favorites include:

Stella – a gorgeous red leather purse which I found in Florence, Italy;

Vincenzo (Vinny, for short) – Vinny is Stella’s hot other half, a Caramel colored leather jacket, also from Florence;

Murphy – a very furry hat that I used to wear in Germany during the many snowy months;

George and Frank – the dynamic duo of Pothos plants which have been with me since my first college dorm room;

And last but not least, The Silver Bullet, my 1997 Honda Civic – I got her when I graduated from high school. She has been a faithful friend.

I suppose I ought to end this exhaustive comment. Thanks for such an entertaining post, Jessica Ann (WITHOUT AN E) – I laughed so hard that my chest hurt. :) Can’t wait to watch old episodes of the Cosby show with you in Brooklyn one day!

Excellent additions, friends. And Melissa, you aren’t going to believe this, but I called my first station wagon (that got totalled outside the bi-lo center, rest her soul) The Silver Bullet! A silver ford taurus station wagon. Pretty sure that makes us the highest level of kindredness.

Oh, also, my parents second name choice for me was Melissa. This is just getting eery.

Every year we name our Christmas tree. It started with “Bob.” Not a terribly original name, I know…but when we saw this perfectly round fatter than fat tree I knew right away it was a Bob. Something about the way the bubbly letters in bob sound. It was also a fun name to say with a funny accent. Ever since Bob we have named our trees. Of our 4 named trees we have yet to get a girl…still waiting. (Bob, Harvy, Frank, & Sal). Sal was our first skinny tree.

Also, I’m sure you remember the “Hatian Mobile” – that big Brady Bunch station wagon, white with one blue door…ah, first cars!

How about a Christmas tree named Bruce the Biting Spruce? (Grandma’s old artificial tree, which bites the hands that decorate it)

Or a cat nick-named Habba-Who’s? (real name Thomas)
A dog nicknamed Pud-Paws.
Or a son called Bing-a-Bangs
Or a daughter called (affectionately) – Futz
A car (deceased now) named Ophelia

need I go on? It has got to be in the genes!

And my favorite Allman brothers song is Jessica!
Your Dad had good taste back then!

Or how about nicknames like “Beans”? :-D

What a great post!

I had never thought of naming Christmas trees, but these last two comments have inspired me :)

Me too! The green ipod is Prasino, the external hard drive with all the music is Loreno, and the robot vacuum cleaner is named Polyphemus (we call him Phemus) after the cyclops from the Odyssey because he has one infra-red eye.

What a great blog! You crack me up. I love it, because I am also a namer. I have always named my cars and other random objects. To date, I have been the proud driver of: Bessie the Beast, Trixie, Snapper, Fiona Francesca (FiFi), Roxanne and Gladys Knight. My dad’s truck is named The Silver Bullet. =D
