So apparently I’m turning this blog into a craft site. Sorry for those of you not interested in crafts. I will post something grittier some time soon. Until then, my instructions for turning another person’s junk into your treasure.First, find a massive cable spool in a sidewalk trash heap. Proceed to roll the spool through the streets of Brooklyn for 15 minutes to your unrenovated church building, avoiding splinters, cars and small children (they find this quite entertaining). Next, have boyfriend pull out sharp metal staples that could injure users, and you cut out two layers of egg crate just a bit larger than the top.

Lay two foam circle on top, and cover with fabric circle that measures about 10 inches past the edge.Fold over opposite ends, pull tight, and wield your staple gun with pride! Do same to opposite corners, until entire circle is secure.

What an awesome idea! I work for an electric utility provided that goes through these spools faster than toilet paper! I wanted to suggest to people that they call their electric utility provider or local electrician and ask if they have any extra wooden spools they’d like to get rid of. We give ours away for free to anyone who wants them!

That is good idea. I have one but put on my plant.

Great idea! I’m definitely going to give this a try in my new place. I like the fabric.

That is genius! I love how you turned an industrial piece of raw material into a stylish, re-purposed home decor delight. Bravo! I would love to make one of these on our show ‘Decor It Yourself’ over on Threadbanger.com Do you have a video of how to make this?
Thanks, Meg

Hi, Im making one of these and I’m at the point where I need to cut my foam. When you say the foam needs to be “a little bit larger” how much larger is that? I mean, should the foam actually wrap around the edge of the top? It seems like visually this would be the best looking, but I’m not sure my fabric will with hold that much pressure. Yours is beatiful. How did you do it? Thanks!

I made it just two inches over, but really, I think it would work better making it more like 5 or 6 and wrapping it around all the way with the fabric. Hope that helps. Post some pics of your finished product!

ok, here they are. I finished it weeks ago but just now took the pictures off my camera. Not great photos… but you get the idea!
